Vedic SquareThe Vedic Square is a mathematical recreation which draws interesting number sequences and patterns from a 9x9 grid. You can use it, for example, to make learning multiplication tables a lot more fun for children. 1) Start with a 9x9 grid (as in other mathematical recreations like Sudoku). 2) Fill the number sequence from 1 to 9 in the topmost row, and also in the leftmost column, as shown in Figure A.
3) Fill in the remaining cells with the multiplication of their row and column values, as shown in Figure B. 4) Reduce any value above 9 to its single digital sum. For example, the last cell in the bottom right corner is 9 x 9 = 81 reduced to 8 + 1 = 9 (Steps 3 and 4 above may be done in one go, or if necessary, transfer step 4 to a new grid) 5) Now your square should look like Figure C. Draw straight lines to connect the midpoints of cells of the same value and interesting patterns will emerge. Click here to view.
Explore the Vedic Square further and see if you can derive other number variations and patterns out of it. It has a lot of scope for creativity. | ||||
