This question was often put by mesmerised members of the audience to the late Shankaracharya of Jagannatha Puri, His Holiness Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaja, whenever he demonstrated the neat, elegant techniques of the ancient system of speedy calculation that he had successfully re-constructed.
In reply, the Maharaja would usually quip: "It's both - it's magic until you understand it; thereafter it's mathematics!" That aptly describes the system of mathematics he founded based on 16 Sanskrit sutras, now being popularly referred to as "Vedic Mathematics".
Likewise, yantras may be similarly described -- they are mathematical as well as magical!
The mathematics of yantras is based on combinations of geometrical shapes and elements, magic numbers, and other special symbolic or numeric combinations.
Up Yantras are used in Vedic Astrology and Vastu as remedial measure to positively enhance the key planet/s influencing your horoscope or various directions of your property. The highest remedial measure is japa (chanting) of the mantras accompanying the yantras, and the highest mantra especially recommended in the Vedas for this Kali age (of quarrel) is the mahamantra:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
The power of the yantra is increased by chanting the respective mantras (as shown in order in table below). You may select your personal yantras by your Ascendant sign (Lagna), or your Moon sign (Rasi), or your Sun sign. In Vedic Astrology, the Ascendant and Moon sign are generally regarded as being more significant than the Sun sign. Use the table below to choose the yantras corresponding to your personal zodiac signs.

Your yantra is your lucky talisman. You can use it in a variety of ways. Keep it with you in your briefcase or handbag, or in your vehicle. Or put it on your desk. Or mount it on a wall within your working or living space. Again, chanting the accompanying mantras daily will increase the effectiveness of the yantras.
In regards to Vastu, the set of all the above yantras can be used to enhance the auspiciousness of the various directions of your property (including the entrance), and reduce the negative effects arising from any Vastu defects (non-conformity to Vastu principles).
The eight directional yantras (from Vasudeva to Kurma in above table) are placed at or near the points where the eight compass directions radiating from the centre cut the inside of the main walls defining your building space. The entrance yantra (Matsya) may be affixed on the inside wall over the main door. The Shri Yantra is affixed on the wall in the region of the North (or the NorthEast or East) to activate the important zones for prosperity. To give some examples of positioning, the arrowheads in the diagrams below indicate the yantra placement points for two rectangular building spaces which are about the same size but aligned differently from the cardinal North.

|
|
| If your space is aligned with the four cardinal directions, North (N), East (E), South (S), West (W), that is best (though rarely seen). Then the four cardinal directions plus the four intermediate directions NorthWest (NW), NorthEast (NE), SouthEast (SE), SouthWest (SW), when projected from the centre of your defined space, may cut the inside main walls as above | But if your space is out of alignment (as is tne common case), for example about 45° from the North, the eight directions of the compass would be projected from the centre of your space as above. Place the respective directional yantras at or near the marked arrowheads |
The simplest way to install the yantras is to chant the corresponding mantra at least three times and affix the yantra (at a reasonable height to be viewed clearly) at or near the respective points of the projected directions of the compass (considering aesthetics and other factors, of course). It is best to install the yantras on a good muhurtha (timing) when you are clean and in good consciousness. If a muhurtha is not readily available, then do it during one of the following general good timings:
- During Brahma-muhurtha which starts about 96 minutes before sunrise and runs for about 48 minutes. For example, if sunrise is at 06:36, then do it between 05:00 - 05:48. This is an estimate only, but it generally suffices (unless your location is near the Poles and the difference between the length of the day and night varies greatly). If you'd like to calculate Brahma-muhurtha precisely for your location, here's the formula: divide the length of the night (from sunset to next sunrise) into 15 equal slices; the penultimate (last but one) timeslice is the extent of Brahma-muhurtha, generally the most auspicious part of the day for spiritual activities like prayer, chanting, meditation, study.
- During high noon when the Sun is directy overhead. This may not be exactly 12 noon but would be in somewhat close proximity (depending on your location and timezone).
After putting up the yantras, enhance their effectiveness by chanting the mantras daily (in the order shown in above table), each verse thrice. This should take no more than five minutes of your time daily.
When you begin to enjoy the chanting and would like to do more, just increase chanting the mahamantra to 108 times (to keep count, use beads, rosary or any counter). If you can maintain this chanting without fail daily, it means that you have achieved a spiritual breakthrough, a sure sign that you are already on the road to making a success of your life!

Shri Chakra Gold -- behold its beauty!
Up
The Shri Yantra is among the most powerful of all the ancient icons. This yantra, named after the goddess of fortune, has been used for thousands of years to invoke good fortune, wealth, health and as an aid for meditation.
Even modern scientists are studying and researching the effects of the Shri Yantra, trying to comprehend its subtle powers. American physicist Dr Patrick Flanagan, after extensive experiments, declared the Shri Yantra as “the king of the power diagrams” and described its energetic effect as seventy times greater than that of a pyramid construction.
Researchers have also attributed the extraordinary energetic power of the Shri Yantra to its precise geometry which has interesting mathematical implications, including the Golden Ratio and even parallels to the geometric structure of the hydrogen atom and the ratios of its emission lines. The mathematics of constructing the Shri Yantra as precisely as possible is also a topic of tertiary research.
The
Shri Yantra and the Dashavatara yantras are among the simple but powerful tools available to remedy Vastu defects in your home or office building and harmonise it with the subtle forces of Mother Nature.
The Shri Yantra is generally placed in the north or northeast of your room or building to activate the respective directions of wealth and auspiciousness. Its captivating design makes it a popular tool for meditation. As you gaze on it, you will appreciate its beauty and understand why.

The Shri Chakra is a golden three-dimensional solid metallic projection of the Shri Yantra and has the power to enhance the overall good fortune and reduce disruptions in the flow of revenue caused by blockages in the North - the direction of wealth - of your living or working space.
It is important to have a door or window or some opening in the North of your property to invite prosperity. This is especially true for business premises. However if the North and NorthEast is completedly blocked and structural correction is not possible, the Shri Chakra is a perfect remedial tool to activate the directions of prosperity. Dedicated to the goddess of fortune, the Shri Chakra, when positioned in the North or NorthEast of a room/building, also reduces other Vastu defects significantly.
While the Shri Yantra has a series of interlocking triangles that are arranged in five levels around the center, the Shri Chakra has these same levels arranged at different heights. The complex geometric dimensions of our Shri Chakra have been precisely calculated by computer and transferred to laser to cut the mould.
Our Shri Chakra is cast from an auspicious alloy of copper, tin, silver and other metals and plated with 24-carat gold. Precious metals and the precision in manufacture help make our Shri Chaktra unrivalled in its energetic as well as aesthetic effect.
The beauty and precision of cut of our Shri Chakra stands well above all other competing versions. You will know when you see it.
Up What would be an appropriate logo for our site which promotes things both mathematical and magical?
We thought about the keywords "math" and "magic" and mused about magic numbers. Then we got the answer (it was there, right under our nose) - a numeric yantra.
We based our logo on a yantra borrowed from the Vedic science of Jyotisha (Astronomy/Astrology) which is built on the foundation of Ganita (Mathematics). Numeric yantras have long been used in Astrology to represent the powers of the navagrahas (the nine key planets). They are basically a matrix of numbers in magic square-like arrangement.
Behold the ultimate numeric yantra -- the Shri Rama Yantra -- a 4 x 4 matrix of magic numbers. It's our logo.

Planetary numeric yantras
Up There are also numeric yantras representing the navagrahas, the nine key planets of Vedic Astrology. These yantras are 3 x 3 matrix of magic square numbers, with the planet's number in the top middle cell. The Sun, the king and central figure of the navagrahas, is
numero uno (1), followed by the Moon (2), Mars (3), Mercury (4), Jupiter (5), Venus (6), Saturn (7), Rahu (8), Ketu (9).
